REVIEW: An Affirmation in Verse, November 30, 2012

“The Pussy Poems could as easily be called “The Pussy Manifesto.” It is a bold affirmation of mystery, pain, beauty, pleasure and love–and all the emotions associated with the wondrous essence of female. Allen embraces them all and declares them as hers–the attitudes that women, as well as men who would approach the mystery have toward the Sacred Flower. It is perhaps revealing that Allen uses the word “cunt” far more frequently than “pussy” and the even less often “cooch.” It is an act of reclaiming since “cunt” is often used derogatorily and Allen takes it into the realm of affirmation.
And that affirmation is executed in rich language and imagery that draws the reader into the multi-faceted experience and depths of insight that a pussy presents, which includes a connection to the heart. To a male reader, it evokes chagrin for mistakes and longing memories of delight. And it also has a political aspect, again of affirmation and defiance. It should be read from the steps of every capitol.
